Virginia Plays No. 22 Boston College to Scoreless Draw

NEWTON, Mass. – The Virginia men’s soccer team played No. 22 Boston College to a scoreless draw Friday evening at Newton Campus Field in Newton, Mass. Virginia now holds an 8-6-2 record, including a 2-4-1 mark in the ACC. Boston College is 8-4-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the ACC.
With the win Virginia clinches a .500 or better record for the 32nd consecutive season.
“We played hard and played well tonight,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “I think we picked up where we left off from the second half of the Virginia Tech game in terms of our competitive spirit and desire to make a run in the postseason. Tonight was another one of those nights, and we did it on the road against a great team.”
While both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half, Boston College put together the best flurry of the half with a pair of Dylan Pritchard shots in the 17th minute. UVa goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (So., Raleigh, N.C.) made a great diving stop on Pritchard’s first shot, while the second was deflected off the line by a UVa defender. UVa held a 7-5 advantage in shots heading into intermission.
The teams combined for just seven shots in the second half, with UVa taking four. BC took one shot in the final 28 minutes of the half. Each team put one shot on goal in the half.
After neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime period, each side attempted one shot in the second overtime.
LaCivita made a pair of saves to record his fourth shutout of the year. With his 11th career shutout, LaCivita moved into an eighth-place tie with Keith Lenert (1982-85) and Michael Giallombardo (2006-08) on the all-time Virginia shutouts chart. Boston College goalkeeper Justin Luthy made three saves.
Virginia took a dozen shots, while Boston College was credited with nine. UVa held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. BC committed 16 fouls, while the Cavaliers were called for 15.
Virginia wraps up the regular season next Thursday (Nov. 1) when it travels to NC State. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. The match will be webcast by ESPN3.
