Virginia Swimming and Diving Sweeps Pittsburgh in First Road Meet

PITTSBURGH—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Pittsburgh in their first road meet of the season Sunday (Oct. 28) in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Cavalier men (2-0) won, 155-130, while the women (2-0) defeated the Panthers, 155-131.
Sophomore Shaun Casey posted the best time in three events, including the 500 free (4:52.71), the 200 fly (2:00.68) and the 200 IM (2:04.22). Six more Cavaliers picked up two victories, including senior Tom Barrett, juniors Jan Daniec, Emily Lloyd and Rachel Naurath and freshmen Courtney Bartholomew and Carl Buergler.
Barrett swept the men’s sprint free events, touching first in the 50 (20.71) and the 100 (45.28), while Lloyd claimed the same events on the women’s side, placing first in 50 (23.57) and 100 (51.13).
Daniec notched wins in the men’s distance events, taking the 1,000 free in 9:14.77 and the 500 free in 4:28.05. Naurath picked up the victory in the women’s 1,000 in 9:55.43 and the 200 free in 1:48.63.
Bartholomew swept the backstroke events, taking the 100 back in 54.92 and the 200 back in 1:57.61. Fellow freshman Buergler won both diving events on the men’s side, earning 363.08 points on the 3-meter board and 324.00 points on the 1-meter.
Other individual winners on the women’s side included sophomore Ellen Williamson, who finished first in the 100 fly in 54.88, and freshmen Becca Corbett and Katie Warburg shared the diving honors. Warburg won the 3-meter with 283.20 points and Corbett earned 269.18 points on the 1-meter board.
Six other men had top individual times with seniors Brady Fox (200 back – 1:47.37) and Nick Montes de Oca (200 IM – 1:52.40) and junior Parker Camp (200 free – 1:39.48) and sophomore David Ingraham (200 fly – 1:50.19) all touching first. The Cavaliers swept the breaststroke events with junior Taylor Grey picking up the 200 breast title in 2:02.33 and freshman Yannick Kaeser taking the honors in the 100 breast (56.30).
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they take on South Carolina at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va. Diving action will be split up, beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. All the swimming action will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
