CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball hosted its final home match of the season Saturday evening (Nov. 10), coming from behind to defeat Boston College, 25-13, 16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-10, at Memorial Gymnasium.
Virginia improved to 9-19 (3-14 ACC) on the season, while Boston College fell to 10-19 (4-13 ACC) on the year. Before the match, the Cavaliers honored their three seniors, Tobi Farrar (Arlington, Texas), Rachel Gray (Shawnee, Kan.) and Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas).
“The wins are so hard to come by, every night is a battle, so its nice to get a win, especially for these three seniors, who all contributed tonight,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We got out of a rhythm in the second and third sets and to their credit, we got back into one in the fourth and in the fifth, we rode Jess (O’Shoney) who was pretty dominant.”
O’Shoney earned her 400th career block in the third set, becoming the eighth Cavalier in Virginia history to hit that mark. She recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs. The 19 kills matched a career high.
“It was great to get a win on senior night,” O’Shoney said. “The three of us have been through a lot these four years at UVa and it was awesome to get a win in front of our family and friends.”
Freshman Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) hit .414 with 16 kills, while classmate Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) earned a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) tallied a team-high 53 assists, while junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a game-high 26 digs and sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) stuffed eight blocks.
In the first set, the score was tied at five before UVa went on a 9-1 run and went on to win 25-13. The Cavaliers hit .324 while holding the Eagles to a .026 hitting percentage.
Boston College claimed the second set, 25-16, after hitting .469 with 18 kills. The third set was tied at 18 when the Eagles went on a 7-3 run to take a two set to one lead.
The Cavaliers forced a fifth set after hitting .385 in the fourth. O’Shoney had seven kills in the frame, while Bausback added five.
In the decisive fifth, UVa jumped out to a 4-1 lead to force a timeout. The Cavaliers continued the run to build a 9-2 lead before BC earned three straight points to make it 9-5. After the two teams exchanged points back and forth, the Eagles earned two in a row to force a timeout at 12-9.
Out of the timeout, Burcescu earned a kill and Blair and Janowski teamed up on a block to give UVa match point. BC fought off the first match point, but Bausback recorded a kill to clinch the match, 15-10.
Up next, the Cavaliers will travel to Tobacco Road next weekend to face NC State on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. and North Carolina on Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
