ATHENS, Ga.–The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed action on day two of the Georgia Fall Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium Saturday evening (Dec. 1) in Athens, Ga.
After two days of action, UVa’s men sit in second place with 508 points behind California (592). Georgia is third with 454.5 points, followed by Auburn (390.5), Penn State (381.5), Harvard (207), Virginia Tech (119 – diving only) and Texas (40.5 – split squad).
On the women’s side, Georgia leads with 694 points, followed by California (648), Virginia (391), Auburn (365), Penn State (321), Harvard (190) and Virginia Tech (91 – diving only).
“We fell short in too many places tonight,” head coach Mark Bernardino said. “We swam a lot of people in extra events this morning, so there may have been a little bit of race fatigue, but this is type of competition that will harden us for the championship portion of our season. We’ll come back tomorrow and continue to work hard and swim aggressively.”
Senior Lauren Perdue has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in March with a time of 1:43.62, placing second place. Junior Rachel Naurath touched eighth in 1:47.16.
“Anytime an individual automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships, it’s an outstanding performance,” Bernardino said. “I think we’ve put up some significant other individual times this weekend that will qualify for the national meet.”
The women’s 800 free relay team of Perdue, Naurath and sophomores Shaun Casey and Ellen Williamson placed third in an NCAA `A’ time of 7:05.10.
The team of senior Tom Barrett, junior Parker Camp, freshman Nick Alexiou and sophomore David Ingraham touched third in the men’s 800 free relay in 6:27.19.
Freshman Courtney Bartholomew placed fourth in the women’s 100 back in 52.28, ranking second on UVa’s all-time list.
In the men’s 200 free, Camp finished fourth in 1:37.39, while freshman Nick Alexiou was sixth in 1:37.96.
Ingraham (3:50.48) placed fourth in the men’s 400 IM, while junior Brad Phillips placed seventh in 3:52.88.
In the women’s 1-meter diving finals contested in the afternoon, freshman finished fourth with a score of 273.70, while classmate (248.05) and sophomore (220.05) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
Sophomore JB Kolod (334.75) placed fifth in the men’s 3-meter diving, while freshmen Carl Buergler (345.00) and Jordan Sacks (311.80) placed ninth and 14th, respectively.
“I am so proud of how this young diving team performed so far this weekend,” diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “To have all these divers in A and B finals is awesome. I was especially proud of the girls today sending all three to the A final. It was also good to see all the divers in B finals hold their spots or move up since they were seeded high in those heats.”
In the women’s 100 fly, sophomore Ellen Williamson placed fifth in 54.07, while in the men’s 100 fly, senior Brady Fox touched eighth in 48.49.
Freshman Yannick Kaeser placed fifth in the men’s 100 breast in 55.18, while junior Taylor Grey came in seventh in 55.69.
Junior Jack Murfee (48.45), freshman Luke Papendick (48.74) and sophomore Kyle Dudzinski (48.85) placed 6-7-8 in the men’s 100 back.
In the men’s 200 medley relay, the `A’ team of Murfee, Kaeser, Fox and Barrett finished seventh in 1:29.15, while the `B’ team of Camp, Grey, Dudzinski and sophomore Charlie Rommel placed eighth in 1:30.12.
In the women’s 200 medley relay, the team of Bartholomew, sophomore Shaun Casey, Williamson and junior Emily Lloyd placed ninth in 1:41.14.
The meet concludes Sunday with the prelims at 9:30 a.m. and the finals at 3 p.m. The 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, 400 free relay platform diving will be competed.
