Miller, Doniak and Swanson Take Top VaSID Soccer Awards

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior forward Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.), freshman forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) and head coach Steve Swanson earned top honors as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2012 All-State Women’s Soccer Team on Wednesday. Miller was named State Player of the Year, Doniak was the State Freshman of the Year and Swanson received State Coach of the Year honors.
Miller and Doniak were also named to the All-State First Team, as were midfielders Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.). Defenders Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) and Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.) were named to the second team.
The 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Miller set single-season school records with 20 goals and 47 points this season. The conference leader in goals and points in 2012, she is one of just four players nationally to reach the 20-goal mark this season and the first from the ACC in four years to accomplish the feat. A 2012 NSCAA First-Team All-American, Miller ended her season on a school-record eight-game goal scoring streak, tallying 11 goals against those eight opponents, all of which made the NCAA Tournament. Earlier this month she became the first Cavalier to ever be named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy.
Doniak was second on the team with 10 goals, eight assists and 28 points this season. She was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Team of the Season First Team and was an ACC All-Freshman Team selection. Doniak became the first player in school history to score a goal in each of the first five games of her career.
Swanson was named VaSID State Coach of the Year for the sixth time. He led the Cavaliers to the ACC Championship and a No. 2 national ranking in 2012. Swanson also directed the United States to the championship at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in September and is a nominee for FIFA Women’s Soccer World Coach of the Year.
