No. 19 Cavaliers Romp Past Bucknell, 31-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The 19th-ranked Virginia wrestling team won nine of 10 matches in a 31-6 victory over Bucknell Friday morning in the first round of the 2013 Virginia Duals Tournament at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. The No. 4 seed in the 16-team dual-meet tournament, Virginia (7-2) advances to wrestle fifth-seeded Boise State at 1 p.m.

The Cavaliers won their first nine bouts in cruising to the win over the Bison (2-6). Jedd Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio), Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio) and Stephen Doty(R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) scored bonus points at 157, 165 and 197 pounds, respectively, for Virginia.
Seventh-ranked Matt Snyder(R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) got the Cavaliers off to a good start with a 1-0 win over Austin Miller at 125. Snyder rode Miller the entire second period to rack up 2:00 minutes of riding time. He was the aggressor in the third period as well but could not finish on his takedown attempts but earned the riding time point for the win.
No. 13 George DiCamillo(Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio) scored an early takedown in first period and was in control throughout in an 8-3 triumph over BU’s Paul Petrov. DiCamillo built up 2:40 in riding time.
At 141 pounds Jimmy Nehls(R-Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) notched a 6-2 win over Bucknell’s Derrik Russel. Nehls broke the early deadlock with a takedown at 1:30 of the first period and built up 53 seconds in riding time before allowing an escape. He built his riding time to 1:58 in the second period before Russel escaped. After escaping 30 seconds into the third, Nehls took Russel down with 20 seconds left in the match to lock up the win.
No. 16 Derek Valenti(R-Sr., Newton, N.J.) picked up a 7-2 decision over Bucknell’s Adam Healey at 149. Valenti held a 4-2 lead going into the third, but scored off Healey’s double-leg shot with a takedown of his own at 1:05 to take a commanding lead.
Moore earned his 12th straight win in dominating fashion, a 16-1 technical fall over Vincent Favia. Moore shot out to a 10-0 lead after a period. He quickly took Favia down and put him on his back for a pair of back points and a 4-0 led. He controlled from the top the rest of the period and twice picked up three-point near falls. He finished the tech fall with 49 seconds remaining in the third period on a takedown.
Sulzer cruised to a 19-6 major decision over Robert Schlitt at 165. Sulzer took Schlitt down five seconds into the first period and racked up over four minutes of riding time as he dominated throughout.
No 15 Jon Fausey(R-Jr., Dalmatia, Pa.) racked up 3:46 in riding time in a 4-0 decision over Ray Schlitt. Fausey scored a takedown 56 seconds into the first period, then rode Schlitt for the final 2:04 of the period.
Zach Nye(R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) broke open a tight bout in the third period to win 4-1 over BU’s Robert Marchese. After a scoreless first period, Nye escaped seven seconds into second stanza. The score remained 1-0 until the third; the two started neutral, but Marchese quickly shot in and knocked Nye to the mat, but Nye avoided the takedown attempt and rolled through to gain control for a takedown of his own. Marchese escaped with 27 seconds remaining, but Nye had already built up 1:12 in riding time for the bonus point.
Wrestling up a weight class, Stephen Doty(R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) dominated throughout in a 9-1 major decision over BU’s Tyler Lyster. Doty scored a takedown midway through the first and was in control most of the way from there.
Bucknell broke through at heavyweight when Joe Stolfi pinned UVa’s Patrick Gillen(R-Fr., Shelton, Conn.) in the second period. The match was scoreless heading into the second period before Stolfi was able to put Gillen on his back and finish off the pin.
