No. 19 Cavaliers Top Boise State, Advance to Semifinals

HAMPTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Virginia wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Virginia Duals Tournament with a 21-13 triumph over Boise State Friday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. The No. 4 seed in the 16-team dual-meet tournament, Virginia (8-2) will wrestle ninth-ranked and top-seeded Central Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Virginia (8-2) advanced to the semifinals of the Virginia Duals for the first time in its 19 trips to the tournament. The Cavaliers also have clinched their best finish ever at the tournament; their previous best was sixth in 2011.

Stephen Doty (R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Jimmy Nehls (R-Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) each picked up key decisions in swing matches, while Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.) and Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio) racked up bonus-point victories for Virginia.
“The story of the day for us was Jimmy Nehls and Stephen Doty,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “Jimmy has battled through a lot, and his win over Boise was key in setting the tone for the match. Doty bumped up a weight to 197 and was great. He beat a tough kid to clinch the match for us. It was a great day for us and a big win over a tough Boise State team which just upset Oregon State last week. We’re looking forward to another tough match with Central Michigan on Saturday.”
Doty, Nehls, Snyder, Sulzer, George DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio) and Jon Fausey (R-Jr., Dalmatia, Va.) each recorded wins in UVa’s matches against Bucknell and Boise State.
The seventh-ranked Snyder rolled to a 15-0 technical fall over Rami Haddadin at 125 pounds. After taking Haddadin down at the 2:13 of the first, Snyder twice pulled him into a cradle for three-point near falls. He nearly pinned Haddadin in the third period before settling for a three-point near fall which clinched the tech fall.
Ranked No. 13 nationally, DiCamillo came back for a 4-2 win over Brian Owen at 133. DiCamillo gave up a first-period takedown but bounced back in the second period with an escape point, followed by a takedown. DiCamillo then rode Owen for the entire third period to claim the riding time point and the match win.
Nehls picked up a 6-1 win over Travis Himmelman at 141. Nehls scored the match’s first takedown at 1:01 of the first, then maintained advantage for the rest of the period. He added an escape point before taking Himmelman down again with 41 seconds left in the second.
UVa lost narrow contests at 149 and 157 in battles of ranked foes. No. 16 Derek Valenti (R-Sr., Newton, N.J.) dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 2 Jason Chamberlain at 149. Chamberlain took Valenti down at the 2:10 mark of the first period, but Valenti escaped 14 seconds later. Valenti escaped 14 seconds into the second period to knot the score but was assessed a penalty point with 25 seconds left after his second stall warning. Chamberlain put the match away with a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the third.
Jedd Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) had his 12-match win streak snapped in a 5-2 loss to No. 16 George Ivanov of Boise State at 157. The match was tied at two late in the third with Moore on top and closing on the riding time point, but Ivanov finally escaped and took a 3-2 lead as Moore hit 55 seconds of riding time. In a scramble near the edge of the mat, Ivanov took Moore down with 15 seconds left to finish off the win.
Sulzer recorded four takedowns in the first period to take a commanding lead and cruised from there as he defeated Boise State’s Holden Packard in a 16-6 major decision at 165. Sulzer accumulated 2:04 in riding time.
Ranked 15th nationally, Fausey grinded out a 3-1 decision over BSU’s Scott Bacon at 174. After a scoreless first period, Fausey started in the bottom position in the second and escaped after 50 seconds. He went in for single-leg shot to take Bacon down with 20 seconds left in the second to push his lead to 3-0 after two periods.
No. 11-ranked Jake Swartz of Boise State scored an 11-5 decision over Zach Nye (R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) at 184. Swartz broke through for a takedown at the 1:10 mark of the first and added another takedown with eight seconds left in the first to take a 4-1 lead. Nye fended off the major-decision attempt.
In a key swing match, Doty knocked off Cody Dixon, 13-7, at 197 to clinch the team win for Virginia. Doty was taken down in the first 30 seconds, but quickly escaped. Trailing 3-1 in the second, he took Dixon down and then locked him up on his back for a three-point near fall, then held him there as he rolled his riding time to 1:01 before allowing an escape. After Doty escaped to start the third, he recorded a takedown near the edge of the mat to push his lead to 9-4. Dixon escaped, then quickly pounced for a takedown to cut the lead to 9-7. He allowed Doty to escape, but Doty worked for another late takedown and earned the riding time point to finish off the win.
In the heavyweight bout, 10th-ranked J.T. Felix pulled away in the final period to notch a 13-2 major decision over Virginia’s Patrick Gillen (R-Fr., Shelton, Conn.).
