BUIES CREEK, N.C.—The Virginia softball team fell to Campbell, 8-0 in five innings, Friday evening (Feb. 8) in the second game of the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational in Buies Creek, N.C.
UVa fell to 1-1 on the season, while the game marked Campbell’s season opener.
Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) had the only Cavalier hit off Camel starter Courtney Roberts.
In the bottom of the first, Campbell struck for three runs on a Sarah Forgacs home run before freshman pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) settled down and retired the side in the second and third innings.
After a walk in the fourth, Raven Lee hit a two-run shot over the right-center field fence to give the Camels a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Camels earned a single and a walk before Stephanie Jones hit a home run to left field off of freshman Emma Mitchell (Doswell, Va.) to finish the game.
Chapdelaine (0-1) struck out two in four innings of work, allowing five runs, while Mitchell allowed three runs in a third of an inning.
Roberts (1-0) threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts for the win.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Feb. 9) when they play in the final day of the Campbell/Hamilton Inn Invitational against St. Bonaventure and George Washington at 6:20 p.m. and 8:40 p.m., respectively.
