PALM SPRINGS, Calif.–The Virginia softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday (Feb. 23) in Palm Springs, Calif. The Cavaliers defeated Colorado State, 7-1, before falling to Stanford, 4-0, as Cardinal pitcher Kelsey Stevens threw a perfect game.

Against the Rams, senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) pitched a shutout and junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) had two RBI to lead UVa. Senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) and junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) each had two hits.

Mitchell (5-3) tossed 11 strikeouts, while only allowing one run in seven innings of work. CSU pitcher Kacie McCarthy allowed seven runs (three earned) with seven strikeouts in six innings.

In the second game, Stanford’s Stevens struck out 10 in a perfect game for the win, while Mitchell allowed four runs with three strikeouts in six innings, but took the loss.

The Cavaliers return to action when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., March 1-3 for a tournament at Winthrop.
