Virginia Wins Blue Gray Tennis Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Virginia women’s tennis team won the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic championship, defeating No. 50 Tulane, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point and freshmen Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and senior Erin Vierra(Norwell, Mass.) won their respective singles matches.
Virginia evens its record at 6-6, while Tulane falls to 10-6.
The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point as Vierra and Nauta beat Klara Vyskocilova and Ipek Birol 8-1 at No. 1 and seniors Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) beat Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson 8-3 at No. 2.
Elbaba made it 2-0 with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Jenny Hois at No. 2 singles. Nauta added a 6-4, 6-1 win over Vyskocilova at No. 1.
After Emma Levy defeated Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3, Vierra clinched the win for the second consecutive match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Thornton at No. 5.
Virginia returns home for a pair of ACC matches on March 22-23 against Boston College and Virginia Tech. First serve is set for 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Snyder Tennis Center.
