CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team won its second consecutive extra inning game, defeating George Washington, 2-1 in 10 innings, Wednesday (March 20) at The Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers improved to 12-12 on the season, while the Colonials fell to 11-12.

In bottom of the 10th, senior Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) hit a one-out single and moved to second on a single by sophomore Heidi Velk (Marietta, Calif.). Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.), who extended her hitting streak to 11 games, loaded the bases with a single to left before sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled down the left field line to score Williams and give the Cavaliers the win.

Both teams were scoreless until GW’s Samantha Dos Santos hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Shannon McGinley (Prairie Valley, Kan.) doubled to lead off the inning before stealing third base. After fellow freshman Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) pinch ran for McGinley, Bowdren hit a sacrifice fly to right that tied the game at 1-1.

Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) struck out 16 Colonials in eight innings of work, allowing just four hits and one run. Freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win (3-4).

GW’s Courtney Martin allowed two runs on 10 hits in 9.1 innings of work, but took the loss to fall to 5-7.

Virginia defeated Longwood, 8-7 in nine innings, last Thursday (March 14).

The Cavaliers travel to College Park, Md., for a three-game series with ACC rival Maryland March 23-24. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game are both slated for 1 p.m. starts.
