Virginia Women Finish 18th at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The Virginia women’s swimmers finished 18th at the 2013 NCAA Championships Saturday (March 23) at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The Cavaliers finished with 45 points and placed in the top 20 for the sixth consecutive year.
“After a rough first day, we bounced back admirably,” UVa head coach Mark Bernardino said. “I thought we swam through adversity well and fought back after some our top student-athletes didn’t have their best meet. I’m extremely proud of our younger members of the team that stepped up with best times in the season’s last meet.”
Georgia captured the NCAA title with 477 points, followed by California (393), Tennessee (325.5), Texas A&M (323.5) and Arizona (311).
Freshman Courtney Bartholomew placed second in the 200 back consolation final in 1:52.72 to finish 10th overall. That time is the second-best mark in school history.
In the 200 fly, sophomores Alison Haulsee and Sarah White placed 14th and 16th overall in 1:56.58 and 1:58.04, respectively. White’s time of 1:56.54 in the prelims ranks sixth on UVa’s all-time list.
The 400 free relay of senior Lauren Perdue, sophomore Ellen Williamson and Emily Lloyd and sophomore Emily Dicus finished 16th overall in a time of 3:19.06.
In the 1,650 free, freshman Hanne Borgersen placed just out of the scoring 16, placing 17th in 16:10.24, the eighth-fastest time on the program’s all-time list. Sophomore Kelly Offutt was 20th in 16:11.91, while junior Rachel Naurath was 29th in 16:21.71.
In the morning prelims, Perdue placed 22nd in the 100 free in 48.96, while sophomore Shaun Casey finished 21st in the 200 fly in 1:57.42 and Williamson was 23rd in the 200 back in 1:55.04.
The men’s NCAA Championships will be also held March 28-30 in Indianapolis at the IU Natatorium.
