Women's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 32 Virginia defeated in-state rival No. 55 Virginia Tech, 6-1, in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon at Snyder Tennis Center.
The Cavaliers lost the doubles point, but won six straight singles matches to improve to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia Tech drops to 13-3, 2-1.
Virginia extended its winning streak to five matches, sweeping ACC foes Boston College and Virginia Tech by identical 6-1 scores this weekend.
The Cavaliers lost the doubles point, but gained singles victories from Li Xi (Kunming, China), Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.), Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.), Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
Xi and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos and Emily Lauten 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, but Virginia Tech’s Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford beat Vierra and Nauta 8-4 at No. 2 and Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Elbaba and Tomljanovic 9-7 at No. 2.
Xi evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Williford at No. 4 singles and Tomljanovic gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mita at No. 3.
Vierra increased the Virginia lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kahoun at No. 5 and Elbaba clinched the win with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Martinez-Marcos at No. 2.
Nauta added a 6-4, 7-5 win over Stoica at No. 1 and Peretz outlasted Tea Ivanovic 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 6.
Virginia continues ACC action at No. 7 Duke and No. 1 North Carolina on Friday-Saturday, March 29-30.
