DURHAM, N.C. – No. 7 Duke edged No. 27 Virginia, 4-3, in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis action Friday afternoon at the Sheffield Tennis Center. The Cavaliers fall to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while Duke improves to 12-3, 3-0.
The Cavaliers got off to a good start in doubles as junior Li Xi (Kunming, China) and senior Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) defeated Marianne Jodoin and Nicole Lipp 8-4 at No. 3. No. 57 Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland beat Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) 8-4 at No. 1 before freshman Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and senior Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) clinched the point with an 8-5 decision over Hanna Mar and Mary Clayton at No. 2.
Junior Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lipp at No. 6.
Duke then won three consecutive matches to take a 3-2 lead. Jodoin posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Xi at No. 4, Clayton beat Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Mulholland beat Vierra 7-6, 7-5 at No. 5.
No. 15 Elbaba tied the score at 3-3 with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win over No. 52 Goldfeld at No. 2 singles.
Mar clinched the win for Duke with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 win over Nauta at No. 1.
Virginia plays No. 1 North Carolina (1 p.m.) and North Carolina Central (5:30 p.m.) tomorrow in Chapel Hill.
