Browns Summit, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team posted the best single-round score in its history to grab the first round lead at the Bryan National Collegiate being contested in Browns Summit, N.C. The Cavaliers shot 7-under 281 on the Bryan Park Champions Course to finish the first 18 holes with a five-shot lead over No. 7 Vanderbilt.

UVa’s score tied as the second best 18-hole effort in the history of the tournament. This year’s Bryan National Collegiate features 15 teams that are currently ranked in the Golfstat top-50 poll.

Virginia was led by a trio of scorer’s who finished the opening round under par. Junior Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford, Va.) led that group with a career best 4-under 68 to take the lead in stroke play. Brightwell leads Vanderbilt’s Rene Sobolewski by one shot on the leaderboard.

Brightwell used five birdies and an eagle over her first 16 holes to stand at 6-under before finishing her round with back-to-back bogeys. Brightwell’s previous low single-round score was 70 that she has posted three times during her career.

UVa’s Brittany Altomare and Briana Mao are tied for third place at 2-under 70. Portland Rosen is in 15th place at 73 and Nicole Agnello finished the first round in 56th place at 5-over 77.

The second round of the tournament gets underway at 8:20 a.m. Saturday and the final round is set for Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
