CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team split a pair of games with Boston College Friday evening (March 29) at the The Park in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (13-16, 2-6 ACC) won the first game, 3-2, before falling, 3-2 (nine innings), in the second contest.
In the first game, the Cavaliers scored three in the first inning as junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) singled to score senior Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) and came around to score on a bases-loaded walk earned by senior Lauren Didlake (Bowling Green, Va.).
Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) pitched the complete game for her 73rd career victory (10-9), putting her one shy of the UVa record, set by Lisa Palmer (74). She struck out 10 in seven innings, and is now five shy of 1,000 career strikeouts.
Stephanie Lord (0-2) took the loss for Boston College (9-16, 2-4 ACC), allowing three runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings of work.
The two teams battled in a pitcher’s duel in the second game, with the Eagles coming away with the 3-2 win in nine innings.
After the Eagles scored in the top of the first, the Cavaliers loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) drove home Velk on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
In the ninth inning, Boston College scored two unearned runs after a passed ball on a third strike with two outs. The Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the inning with a lead off triple by Williams and an RBI groundout by Bowdren, but could not find a second run.
Freshman pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched a complete game, but fell to 3-6 on the season, allowing three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.
BC’s Chelsea Dimon (7-6) struck out four in nine innings with two runs allowed.
The two teams conclude the series Saturday (March 30) with a single game scheduled for a noon start.
