Women's Tennis Blanks Wake Forest, 7-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18 Virginia defeated Wake Forest, 7-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon at Snyder Tennis Center.
Virginia improved to 11-7, 5-1 ACC with its third consecutive win. Wake Forest fell to 1-15, 0-6 ACC with its 15th consecutive loss.
The Cavaliers captured the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Freshman Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and senior Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) beat Karen Forman and Xue Zhang 8-4 at No. 2 and senior co-captain Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) clinched the point with an 8-2 win over Kathryn Talbert and Kasey Gardiner at No. 1. Junior Li Xi (Kunming, China) and senior co-captain Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Andrea Retolaza and Catherine Roach at No. 3.
In singles, Fuccillo beat Roach in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 and Vierra defeated Retolaza 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Nauta clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Zhang at No. 2.
Tomljanovic beat Gardiner 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 and Xi defeated Forman 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Elbaba closed the scoring with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Talbert at No. 1.
The Cavaliers host No. 44 NC State and East Tennessee State on Sunday, April 7. The action at Snyder Tennis Center begins at 12 p.m.
