CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18 Virginia defeated No. 44 NC State and East Tennessee State in women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon at Snyder Tennis Center.

Virginia (13-7) improved to 6-1 in the ACC with its 5-2 win over NC State and beat East Tennessee State, 4-1, to complete the three-match weekend sweep. The Cavaliers defeated Wake Forest, 7-0, on Saturday.

The Cavaliers captured the doubles point and the first four singles matches to defeat NC State (11-6, 2-5 ACC).

In doubles, NC State’s Joelle Kissell and Tatiana Illova defeated senior co-captain Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) 8-6 at No. 1. Virginia responded with an 8-5 win from junior Li Xi (Kunming, China) and senior co-captain Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) over Chloe Smith and Sophie Nelson at No. 3. The Cavaliers then clinched the point when freshman Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and senior Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) beat Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez 8-6 at No. 2.

Vierra breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Martinez at No. 5 singles and Nauta beat No. 92 Illova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.

Junior Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hande at No. 6 and Elbaba won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 over Kissell at No. 1.

NC State got on the scoreboard when Tomljanovic retired due to injury at No. 3. Smith added a three-set win over Xi at No. 4.

Peretz, Nauta and Vierra, and the doubles tandem of Elbaba and Fuccillo posted victories against East Tennessee State (11-5).

The Cavaliers take their five-match winning streak to Georgia Tech on Saturday, April 13.
