CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The Virginia softball team dropped the series finale at No. 25 North Carolina, 2-1, Sunday afternoon (April 7) at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. With the loss, UVa fell to 16-19 on the season (3-9 ACC), while the Tar Heels improved to 31-13 (9-3 ACC).
UVa senior starter Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down afterwards, allowing one hit the rest of the way.
After making a couple of good defensive plays in the third, senior Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) hit a long home run to center in the fifth for Virginia’s first run and cut UNC’s lead to 2-1.
Mitchell (12-11) pitched a complete game giving up two runs, both in the first inning, with six strikeouts in six innings.
North Carolina starter Lori Spingola (21-10) allowed two hits and struck out five for the complete game win.
Up next, the Cavaliers host Delaware State Wednesday (April 10) in a doubleheader at The Park in Charlottesville. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
