CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team closed out its home regular season schedule Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Georgia Tech on Senior Day at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (19-0, 8-0 ACC) ran its ACC win streak to 101 consecutive matches, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
“Under the circumstances, I thought the team played well today,” said head coach Brian Boland. “It has been an emotional weekend. I give both Clemson and Georgia Tech a lot of credit for coming ready to play and they didn’t make it easy for us.”
Virginia took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches for the seventh straight match. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park. Ga.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) gave UVa the early edge with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 over Juan Spir and Eduardo Segura. Minutes later Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen(Guatemala City, Guatemala) clinched the point with an 8-1 win over Colin Edwards and Anish Sharma at the No. 3 position.
The Cavalier lead doubled to 2-0 just minutes into singles play. Segura retired with an injury after just one game at No. 4 against Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), giving the UVa freshman the victory. Fellow first-year Styslinger made the score 3-0 with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sharma at No. 5 singles. Georgia Tech got its lone point of the day at No. 1, where Spir upset top-ranked Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) 6-4, 6-1 to cut the advantage to 3-1. Mitchell Frank(Annandale, Va.) followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nathan Rakitt at No. 3 to clinch the victory.
The final two matches on the court featured the two Cavalier seniors playing their final regular season home match. Uriguen posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 over Edwards and Jenkins topped Melian 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to close out the 6-1 win. Uriguen and Jenkins, along with Dino Dell’Orto (Hong Kong, China) and Brian Fang(Hacienda Heights, Calif.), were honored in between doubles and singles for Senior Day.
“I think it was tough for Jarmere and Julen today,” said Boland. “You put so much work and energy into this program for four years and sometimes all of that hits you at the worst time, when you are out there competing on Senior Day. They handled it well and I think that is all part of the learning process.”
Virginia will conclude the regular season next weekend with a trip to Florida. The Cavaliers visit Florida State on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
