Virginia Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at No. 25 Florida State, 3-2 and 10-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—The Virginia softball team dropped two games at No. 25 Florida State Sunday (April 14) at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles (33-14, 12-2 ACC) won 3-2 in eight innings, before defeating the Cavaliers (18-21, 3-11 ACC), 10-2 in five innings.

After FSU’s Maddie O’Brien hit a solo home run to left in the fourth, sophomore Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.) scored the Cavaliers first run in the fifth inning. She reached and moved to second on a Seminole error. When she stole third and the throw was wild, Velk came home to tie the game at 1-1.

In the sixth, junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) hit an infield single to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.). Bowdren moved to third on a single by senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) and came home on a groundout by freshman Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

The Seminoles tied the game with a two-out double by Kirstin Austin that scored Morgan Bullock in the bottom of the sixth.

In the eighth, FSU won the game after Chelsea Adams came around to score on a ball hit by Austin that was not fielded cleanly by senior Lauren Didlake (Bowling Green, Va.).

Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) pitched the complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) with 10 strikeouts in the loss (13-12).

FSU’s Lacey Waldrop allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings of work with six strikeouts. Monica Perry came on and gave up one hit in 1.2 innings of relief to earn the win (16-7).

The game was delayed for 41 minutes in the first inning for rain.

In the second game, the Seminoles struck for two runs in the first and three in the third to build a 5-0 lead.

Junior Peyton Larus (Midlothian, Va.) hit a double to the gap in left center to score Didlake in the fifth. Freshman Shannon McGinley grounded out to score Larus and cut the FSU lead to 5-2.

Florida State followed and scored five runs in the fifth to finish the game.

Chapdelaine (5-8) allowed 10 runs (eight earned) in 4.2 innings, while Perry pitched the complete game win with two runs in five innings.

The two teams conclude the series Monday (April 15) with a single game at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
