TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—The Virginia softball team dropped the final game of a three-game series at No. 25 Florida State, 2-0, Monday night (April 15) at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 18-22 (3-12 ACC), while the Seminoles improved to 34-14 (13-2 ACC).
In the bottom of the second inning, FSU’s Maddie O’Brien hit a solo home run to center that was just out of the out-stretched glove of senior center fielder Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.).
The Seminoles added an insurance run in the fourth, when Kelly Hensley tripled and scored on a Morgan Bullock RBI single.
Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) (13-13) pitched her school-record 112th complete game, allowing four hits and two runs with six strikeouts in six innings.
FSU’s Lacey Waldrop (17-7) pitched the shutout for the win, allowing two hits with ten strikeouts.
Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman Shannon McGinley (Prairie Valley, Kan.) had UVa’s only hits on the night.
Next up, the Cavaliers host NC State for a three-game series April 20-21 at The Park. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game are slated for noon starts.
