Cavaliers Reach 10th Consecutive ACC Men's Tennis Final

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued its search for a seventh consecutive ACC Championship Saturday with a 4-0 semifinal victory over Clemson at the Cary Tennis Park. The Cavaliers (23-0) reached their 10th straight ACC final with the victory and will look for their ninth championship during that span on Sunday. The Tigers fell to 18-7 with the loss.

Virginia will play Wake Forest in Sunday’s championship match. It is the second time the Cavaliers have played the Demon Deacons in the final, having won 4-0 in 2009. It is Wake Forest’s first ACC Tournament final under second-year head coach Tony Bresky, who was a Virginia assistant for eight seasons (2003-10).

“We continue to get better with every match,” said head coach Brian Boland. “The guys are really focused and are going about their business the right way. I couldn’t be happier about the level we are playing at. We are looking forward to tomorrow.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead winning the doubles point for the 18th consecutive match. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) got the Cavaliers started with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Hunter Harrington and Gerardo Meza. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank(Annandale, Va.) downed Ayrton Wibowo and Zachary Rigsby 8-5 at No. 2 to seal the opening point.

The Cavaliers opened singles strong and swept all six first sets for the second straight day. Uriguen doubled the Virginia lead with his 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Austin Ansari. Frank posted his second singles win in as many days at No. 3, downing Meza 6-1, 6-3 to make the score 3-0. Ryan Shane(Falls Church, Va.) closed out the match with his 7-6(5), 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Dominique Maden to send the Cavaliers into the final.

The victory was Virginia’s 105th consecutive win over ACC opposition (regular season and tournaments) and its 20th straight win in the ACC Tournament.

“It is a tribute to a lot of hard work by former and current players,” said Boland of reaching the ACC final for 10 consecutive years. “We are appreciative of everyone who has supported us over the past decade and believes in us and how we are building this program. It is certainly an honor, but we are focused on playing great tennis tomorrow.”

The ACC Tournament final begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park.
