CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team reached the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th consecutive year with a 4-0 second round victory over Minnesota Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (26-0) will travel to Illinois next week as the University of Illinois hosts this year’s NCAA Championships.

“I thought we played really well today and we look forward to going back to another round of 16,” said head coach Brian Boland. “Today the guys were firing on all cylinders. We have a bunch of guys playing their best tennis of their careers right now, and that is a great sign as we head to the NCAA Championships. Minnesota is a great team, as they finished second in the Big Ten this year. To come away with a convincing win today is a sign of where we are as a team at this point of the season.”

The Cavaliers took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) gave Virginia the early edge with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Rok Bonin and Juan Pablo Ramirez. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) clinched the opening point with their 8-4 win at No. 1 over Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg.

In singles, Styslinger quickly doubled the Cavalier advantage as he completed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Froment at No. 4. The final two points were recorded by the two Virginia seniors playing their final match at the Snyder Tennis Center. Julen Uriguen posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Ramirez to make the score 3-0. Jenkins scored the decisive point with his 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 over Bonin.

“It didn’t occur to me that this was my last home match until after it was over,” said Jenkins. “It was a pretty good match to have as a last match. I have had a lot of great memories playing here, so was nice to end my career here on a good note.”

The Cavaliers’ streak of 10 straight Round of 16 appearances is the third longest active streak in the nation. Only UCLA and Baylor have longer streaks.

Virginia will meet California in the NCAA Round of 16 on Thursday, May 16. The match will start at noon CT at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. It is the second consecutive season the Cavaliers and Bears have met in the NCAA Round of 16, with Virginia downing Cal 4-0 last year in Athens, Ga.
