McCarthy Opens Play at NCAA Championships

Atlanta, Ga. – Virginia sophomore golfer Denny McCarthy opened play at the NCAA Championships by shooting 2-over 72 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta. McCarthy is competing as an individual in the 54-hole stroke play portion of the championship.
McCarthy’s opening round score has him in a tie for 66th place after the first 18 holes of play. He had four bogeys and two birdies during his round.
Arizona State’s Jon Rahm jumped out to an early lead in the 156-player field, shooting 9-under 61. Rahm helped the Sun Devils take the early lead in the team championship at 10-under 270. Host Georgia Tech is in second place at 6-under 274.
McCarthy will tee off at 9 a.m. from the 10th hole during the second round of the tournament.
Also on Tuesday, McCarthy was named to the PING Division I All-East Region team. A first-team All-ACC selection, McCarthy leads the Cavaliers with a 72.59 stroke average. McCarthy was also named to the all-region team as a freshman.
