Three Incoming Cavaliers to Compete at World Junior Rowing Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Three incoming freshmen of the Virginia rowing program are set to compete at the 2013 World Junior Rowing Championships, being held in Trakai, Lithuania, Aug. 7-11. The trio of Joanna Gurman (Weston, Conn.), Eliza Spilsbury (Kent, Conn.) and Ali Zwicker (Victoria, British Columbia) will be competing at the international regatta.
Gurman will be competing for the United States in the women’s double sculls. She was a bronze medalist in the same event at the 2012 USRowing Youth Nationals and earned a silver medal in the event at the 2012 Head of the Charles. Gurman was selected to the 2012 USRowing High Performance Team.
Spilsbury will row for the American women’s four and will compete at the World Junior level for the second consecutive year. At the 2012 regatta, Spilsbury earned a silver medal in the women’s eight. She has been a four-time member of the USRowing Junior National Team.
Zwicker will compete for Canada in the women’s four, an event she placed first in at the 2012 CanAmMex regatta against crews from the United States and Mexico. Zwicker also won gold in the women’s eight at the same regatta and won first place in the junior women’s pair at the 2012 British Columbia Championships.
This is the 10th consecutive year the Cavaliers have had at least one competitor at the World Junior Championships. Current Cavalier seniors Brandy Herald (Portland, Ore.) and Elle Murray (Tampa, Fla.) won gold with the U.S. women’s eight in 2009, while Herald also won the same event in 2008. Junior Chandler Lally earned gold with the U.S. women’s four at the 2011 regatta.
