CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team remained undefeated in 2013, downing Richmond 3-0 Sunday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Senior defender Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.) scored twice to lead the Cavaliers, who improved to 4-0 on the season. The Spiders fell to 1-2-1 with the loss.

“It is always good to complete a weekend with two victories,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I didn’t think we were as sharp as have been recently, but give Richmond a lot of credit. They played hard, especially coming off an overtime game on Friday. We just didn’t execute as well as we have been. Our passes weren’t as sharp and our decisions weren’t as good. There are a lot of things we can take away from this game. It is early in the season and these are the games where you can learn about your team and what you need to work on.”

Virginia took the lead in the 23rd minute as Menchel scored her first of the game. Senior defender Morgan Stith (Montclair, N.J.) sent a cross into the box that Menchel headed in at the far post to open the scoring. Two minutes later Menchel struck again, one-timing a cross from junior forward Kaili Torres (Fleming Island, Fla.) for her third goal of the season. It was Menchel’s second career multi-goal game and Virginia took that 2-0 advantage into halftime.

The Cavaliers added one goal in the second half. Sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) scored her third goal of the season in the 56th minute. She dribbled around the keeper and scored on a breakaway set up by a through ball from freshman midfielder Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.), who tallied her first career assist.

Overall Virginia outshot Richmond 28-3 and had a 9-1 corner kick advantage. Senior Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Churchill O’Connell (McLean, Va.) each played a half in goal for the Cavaliers, recording one save a-piece. The Spiders’ Devin O’Brien made eight saves at the other end.

The Cavaliers will continue their homestand on Friday by hosting the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. Virginia plays Rutgers at 7 p.m. in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader. Seton Hall plays William & Mary in the first game at 4 p.m.
