BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team improved to 7-0 with a 7-0 victory over Vermont in the finale of the Sheraton Catamount Classic tournament in Burlington, Vt., earning the Cavaliers the tournament title.
The shutout followed Virginia’s 2-0 blanking of Maine in Saturday’s tournament opener.
“I thought the defense did a phenomenal job this weekend adapting to two different styles of attack,” said head coach Michele Madison. “Being able to keep both Maine and Vermont off the scoreboard is a really great weekend.”Virginia dominated the game, logging 42 shots to Vermont’s four. The Catamounts did not take their first shot of the game until there were 10 minutes left in the contest. Twenty-five of Virginia’s shots were on goal with Vermont’s Stephanie Zygmunt logging 17 saves.
Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) scored two goals with a pair of assists, including setting up the game winner at the 19:52 mark in the first half when junior Kelsey LeBlanc (Haverford, Pa.) tapped in a Buckley pass to score the first goal of the game. Buckley created two goals of her own, dribbling through defenders at the 29:34 and 32:05 marks to give UVa a 4-0 lead at the half.
“We finally got our attack rhythm back and found our passing game,” Madison said. “We also did a good job of driving the ball up the middle. Elly was on fire, taking advantage of her goal-scoring opportunities, but this victory was truly really a great team effort.”
Freshman Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored a pair of goals, sophomore Taylor Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) scored her first of the season and freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) added her second of the weekend.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) had one save while logging her second shutout of the season.
The Cavaliers had four players named to the All-Tournament team. Buckley and Johnstone earned the honor as well as seniors Chloe Pendlebury (Perth, Australia) and Katie Robinson (Mount Joy, Pa.).
Virginia returns home on Friday Sept. 20 at 6 p.m., hosting No. 1 North Carolina. Admission is free for all regular-season home games at Turf Field.
