WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the 2013 fall season at the Tribe Invitational Friday (Sept. 20).
Sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Rachel Pierson(Princeton, N.J.) each won their singles matches in the Megan Moulton-Levy singles flight and teamed for a 2-0 mark in the Katrin Guenther doubles flight.
Elbaba beat VCU’s Yukaka Noi 6-3, 6-0 and Pierson defeated South Carolina’s Katerina Popova 6-3, 6-0.
Elbaba and Pierson also defeated Harvard’s Hannah Morrill and June Lee, 8-2, and South Carolina’s Elixane Lechemia and Caroline Dailey, 8-4.
Sophomores Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), and senior Caryssa Peretz(Cherry Hill, N.J.) also won their singles matches.
The doubles tandems of senior Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Nauta, Collins and sophomore Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.), and freshmen Marie Faure(Toulouse, France) and Peretz each went 1-1.
The Cavaliers are competing in singles and doubles against players from Arkansas, Dartmouth, Harvard, Marshall, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, VCU and host William & Mary.
The action continues tomorrow and Sunday at three facilities – the Millie West Tennis Facility, Commons Courts and the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
