TULSA, Okla. – The ITA All-American Championships, the first major individual tournament of the season, continued Tuesday with the second round of singles qualifying and the start of doubles qualifying at the Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) teamed with sophomore Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) to win a pair of matches in doubles qualifying. The pair topped Henry Craig and Alex Gasson of Denver, 8-4, in the first round before winning 8-3 in the second round over Nils Schuhmann and David Schuster of Hawaii. They play Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez of Florida State in the third round of Wednesday. If they win that match, they will have a final round qualifying match later in the day.
In singles, both Cavaliers in action fell in the second round of qualifying. Shane dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to No. 30 seed Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma. First-year Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, La.) suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to No. 16 seed Andres Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech.
Virginia has four players in the singles main draw, which begins Thursday. The 2010 and 2012 ITA All-American Champion Alex Domijan (Sr., Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and 2011 ITA All-American Champion Mitchell Frank (Jr., Annandale, Va.) are looking to keep the Cavaliers’ streak of championships going, as are sophomores Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala) and Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.).
