TULSA, Okla. – The ITA All-American Championships, the first major individual tournament of the season, will begin main draw play Thursday at the Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Virginia will have three players in the 64-player singles draw and one pair in the 32-team doubles draw.
Junior Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), the 2011 ITA All-American singles champion, is the No. 12 seed in this year’s draw. He opens play against Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA, the nation’s top-ranked freshman.
Sophomore Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.), a quarterfinalist at the event last year, is the No. 16 seed. He plays Michael Redlicki of Duke in the first round.
Sophomore Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is making his first ITA main draw appearance. He plays No. 15 seed Ben Wagland of Georgia in the first round.
Senior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), the 2010 and 2012 ITA All-American singles champion, would have been the No. 2 seed, but withdrew from the tournament due to the passing of his aunt.
Frank and Styslinger will team up in the main draw of doubles. They play the Ohio State pair of Kevin Metka and Peter Kobelt in the first round.
On Wednesday, the Cavalier team of senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) fell in the third round of doubles qualifying. They were edged 8-7(6) by the Florida State team of Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez.
