Frank Reaches ITA All-American Singles & Doubles Round of 16

TULSA, Okla. – The ITA All-American Championships, the first major individual tournament of the season, began main draw play Thursday at the Case Tennis Center. Virginia junior Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) won a pair of singles matches to advance to the round of 16 as he began his quest for a second title. He also paired with sophomore Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) to reach the round of 16 in doubles.
Frank, the 2011 ITA All-American singles champion, is the No. 12 seed in this year’s draw. He opened play with a 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-2 victory over UCLA’s Mackenzie McDonald, the nation’s top freshman. Later the in day he topped Chris Simpson of LSU, 7-6(5), 6-2 in the second round. He will play Winston Lin of Columbia in the round of 16.
Styslinger, a quarterfinalist at the event last year, fell in the second round. After defeating Michael Redlicki of Duke, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round, the 16th-seeded Styslinger losr 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to Austin Smith of Georgia.
Sophomore Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) lost in his main draw debut at the tournament, falling to No. 15 seed Ben Wagland of Georgia, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1. Later in the day he was edged by Baylor’s Mate Zsiga in the backdraw, falling 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-6(5).
In doubles, the fifth-seeded pair of Frank and Styslinger rallied for an 8-7(7) first-round victory over the Ohio State team of Kevin Metka and Peter Kobelt. The Cavalier pair, who trailed 7-4 and saved a match point in the breaker, will Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur of Columbia in the second round.
The ITA All-American Championships run through Sunday in Tulsa.
