Top-Ranked Cavaliers Blank Clemson 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-0 victory over Clemson Sunday in front of 1,902 fans at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (12-0-0) are 6-0-0 in the ACC for the first time in school history, while the Tigers fell to 6-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference.
Junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) had a goal and assist to lead Virginia, while junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) also scored for the Cavaliers.
“It was another good result for our team,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We had the fresher legs today and that certainly helped. We did some good things in the first half except finish some chances. We had some good opportunities to put some distance between us and them before halftime and didn’t do it, so that was a little disappointing. Clemson is a good team and much improved. They will beat some teams down the stretch.”
The Cavaliers took little time taking the lead, scoring in the third minute of play. After a foul on flank, Colaprico’s free kick was headed in by Brian for her eighth goal of the season. Despite several good chances the remainder of the first half, the Virginia lead stood at 1-0 at halftime.
Virginia took control of the match with a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. In the 52nd minute, a failed clearance attempt by the Tigers resulted in the ball landing at the feet of Colaprico, who placed her shot past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season. Six minutes later, senior defender Molly Menchel’s (Alexandria, Va.) long ball set up Doniak, who scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Overall, Virginia outshot Clemson 22-4 on the afternoon and had a 6-1 corner kick advantage. Freshman Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) and senior Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) didn’t have to make a save as they combined for the Cavaliers’ seventh shutout of the season. Clemson goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made seven saves at the other end.
Virginia concludes its homestand Thursday against third-ranked Notre Dame. Game time for the first matchup of two top-three women’s teams in the 22-year history of Klöckner Stadium is 7 p.m. The first 1,500 fans through the gates for the Notre Dame game will receive a Virginia Soccer scarf and all fans will receive a free hot dog and soda.
