Virginia Drops Four-Set Match to Syracuse, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Syracuse, 25-15, 19-25, 20-25 and 19-25, Friday night (Oct. 11) at Memorial Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 9-8 on the season (2-3 ACC), while the Orange (6-11, 1-4 ACC) picked up their first ever conference win as a member of the ACC.
The Cavaliers led in kills, 53-45, but was outhit by the Orange .320-.226. Syracuse held a big advantage in blocks, 17-6.5.
Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) led all hitters with 16 kills, while freshmen Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) added 12 and 11, respectively.
For Syracuse, Lindsay McCabe was one of four hitters with eight or more kills and added a match-high 12 blocks.
In the first set, the Cavaliers hit .522 with 15 kills, while holding the Orange to a .042 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-15 win.
Syracuse greatly improved in the second, hitting .440 and going on an 8-2 run in the middle of the set to open up a 16-10 lead. The Orange took the frame, 25-19.
In the third set, the Orange build a 10-6 lead and the Cavaliers were only able to get within one at 11-10 before Syracuse extended the advantage and won the set, 25-20.
In the fourth, it was back and forth until Syracuse tallied the last eight points to clinch the match, 25-19.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday night (Oct. 11) when they host Boston College at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
