Cornish Victorious on Day One of ITA Atlantic Regional

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Main draw play of singles and doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regional began Friday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Virginia men’s tennis team had just two matches on the day as sophomore Jonathan Cornish (London, England) advanced to the round of 64 of singles.
Cornish defeated Tanner Blane of George Mason 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round. He joins six seeded Cavaliers who received first round byes and will start play at the tournament on Saturday. Sophomore Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) is the tournament’s No. 1 seed, while classmates Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) are the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds respectively. Senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is the No. 10 seed and first-year J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) is the No. 16 seed. First-year Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, La.) is a 17-32 seed.
In doubles, the team of Cornish and sophomore Alex Scheinman (Los Angeles, Calif.) dropped their first round match to Nick Sayer and Patrick O’Keefe of Radford, 8-6. Three Virginia teams are among the top eight seeds in doubles and received first round byes. The pair of Styslinger and Aragone is the top seed in the draw, with J.Shane/Richmond seeded No. 3 and R.Shane/Daigle seeded No. 8.
The tournament runs through Tuesday in Blacksburg. The singles and doubles champion will automatically qualify for the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next month at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
