Three Cavaliers in ITA Atlantic Regional Quarterfinals

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team had three players advance to the singles quarterfinals during Sunday’s play at the ITA Atlantic Regional at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Sophomores Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) and Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), and first-year Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, La.) each won a pair of matches Sunday to advance.

Styslinger, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, posted a pair of straight-set victories. He downed Melker Svard of UMBC 6-3, 6-0 and Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech 6-0, 6-1. He playes fifth-seeded Alexis Heugas of VCU in the quarterfinals. Heugas downed Cavalier first-year J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) in the round of 16.

Third-seeded Shane also had a pair of straight-set wins. He downed Dimitry Zyhmantovich of Norfolk State 6-3, 6-3 and Shea Thomas of Liberty 7-6(4), 6-4. He plays Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals.

Daigle, a 17-32 seed, posted the biggest upset of the tournament on Sunday. After downing No. 15 seed Michal Voscek of VCU 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 32, he upset No. 2 seed Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the round of 16. He plays sixth-seeded Carlos Villa of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals.

Also on Sunday, sophomore Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.), the No. 4 seed, was upset by No. 9 seed Francisco Dias of George Washington, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16. Senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 10 seed, had to pull out of the tournament before his round of 32 match.

In doubles, the last Cavalier pair in the draw, third-seeded Justin Shane and Richmond had to pull out of the tournament due to injury.

The tournament runs through Tuesday in Blacksburg. The singles and doubles champion will automatically qualify for the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next month at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
