ANNAPOLIS, Md.–The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2013-14 season at Navy Friday afternoon (Oct. 25), with the women defeating Navy (250-50) and Yale (237-63), while the men were victorious against the Midshipmen (212-88).

The Cavalier women posted the top marks in all 16 events, while the UVa men finished first in 14 of 16 events.

“I’m very pleased with several things I saw today,” Virginia head coach Augie Busch said. “We were more engaged in our teammates’ swims (than the intrasquad meet) and had solid energy throughout the meet. We’re anxious to get back to practice to begin our final push toward the Ohio State Invite.

“There are numerous things to iron out and the upcoming quad meet will provide a great opportunity to race top-tier teams and continue our preparation to race fast in Columbus. We’re already excited for that meet.”

On the women’s side, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won three events, including the 200m free (2:00.14), 400m free (4:13.63) and 800m free (8:32.47). Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) claimed the 100m back (58.79) and 200m back (2:10.39) and freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) finished first in the 100m breast (1:09.77) and 200m breast (2:30.17).

Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) swept the backstroke discipline, winning the 100m (58.79) and 200m (2:00.13).

Other event winners for the Cavalier men were seniors Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt. – 200m breast), Serge Gould (Bethesda, Md. – 200 IM) and Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va. – 400m free) and junior Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y. – 50m free).

In the last events of the meet, the UVa women’s 400m free relay of freshman Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), Lloyd and seniors Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) touched first in 3:52.23, while the men’s team of Papendick, Camp, Dudzinski and senior Jonathan Buerger (Wesford, Pa.) won in 3:24.42.
