COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped a four-set match at Maryland, 25-21, 21-25, 14-25 and 21-25 Friday night (Oct. 4) in College Park, Md. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 8-7 on the season and 1-2 in ACC play, while the Terrapins improved to 10-5 (2-1 ACC).
Junior Mallory Woolridge (Glen Allen, Va.) hit .444 with nine kills and only one error, while senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a team-high 23 digs. Sophomore Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .294 with eight kills.
Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) added a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs and freshmen Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) recorded 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) added a match-high 45 assists.
The Terrapins led the Cavaliers in blocks, 18-4, and hit .214 to UVa’s .134 hitting percentage. Maryland also led in service aces, 4-2.
Virginia hit .351 in the first set and claimed the frame, 25-21. The Terps closed within 23-21, but Kole earned a kill and a Maryland hitting error finished the set.
In the second set, the Terps hit .325 and won, 25-21, before taking the third set, 25-14, after earning six blocks in the frame.
The fourth set was back-and-forth until Maryland went on a 6-0 run late in the set and was victorious, 25-21.
Mary Cushman led Maryland with 16 kills and 13 digs and Kelsey Hrebenach has 12 blocks.
The Cavaliers travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers Saturday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m.
