Team Notes
• Virginia is now 0-1 all-time vs. Ball State and 10-2-1 vs. current Mid-American Conference teams.
• Virginia First Time Starters: Offense: Kyle Dockins (WR), Keeon Johnson (WR), Jackson Matteo (C), Eric Smith (RT)
• True freshman Keeon Johnson (WR) made his collegiate debut.
• Virginia rushed for 236 yards on 41 carries, marking the second time the Cavaliers have rushed for more than 200 yards this season (VMI).
• Virginia’s 85-yard scoring drive (11 plays) in the third quarter was its longest yardage drive of the season.
• The Cavaliers had a season-high 13 penalties for 93 yards.
• The 13 penalties marked the most by any ACC team this season.
• Virginia allowed two receivers with 100 yards receiving (Jordan Williams and Willie Snead) for the first time since Maryland’s Quintin McCree and Kerry Boykins in 2011.
• Virginia allowed a 300-yard passer (Keith Wenning – 346 yards) for the first time since North Carolina’s Bryn Renner (315) in 2012.
Player Notes
• Quarterback David Watford passed for a career-high 209 yards on 21-for-36 passing.
• Watford had a career-long 27-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
• Watford ran for a career-high 47 yards on 11 carries.
• Kevin Parks had his fifth career 100-yard rushing game with a team-leading 104 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns.
• Khalek Shepherd rushed for a career-best 71 yards on eight carries.
• Keeon Johnson had three catches for 46 yards in his collegiate debut.
• Senior Tim Smith returned his first career punt for 36 yards.
• Smith’s 36-yard return is the longest punt return for UVa this season and the longest since Vic Hall’s 45-yarder vs. Pittsburgh in 2007.
• Smith’s 46-yard reception was the longest by a Cavalier wide receiver this season.
• Junior Alex Vozenilek went 2-for-2 on field goal in his collegiate debut as a placekicker.
• Junior Darius Jennings had a career-long 37-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.
• Jennings’ reception streak ended at 17 games.
• Dominique Terrell extended his reception streak to a team-best 18 games.
• Jackson Matteo became the first Virginia walk-on offensive lineman to start a game since Isaac Cain vs. TCU in 2009.
• Eric Smith became the fourth true freshman in UVa history to start at an offensive tackle position, joining D’Brickashaw Ferguson (2002 – LT), Brad Butler (2002 – RT) and Morgan Moses (2010 – RT).
• Brent Urban had a career-high 10 tackles.
• Henry Coley had a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss.
• Max Valles had a career-high two pass break-ups.
• Daquan Romero tied a career-high with two pass break-ups.
Ball State Notes
• Ball State’s win over Virginia was only the second all-time by a Mid-American Conference school. Virginia entered the game with a 10-1-1 mark versus current MAC schools.
• The win over Virginia was the first non-conference loss in the month of October for the Cavaliers since a 31-21 loss to East Carolina in 2006.
• This is the first time in school history the Cardinals have defeated an ACC opponent.
• Wenning became Ball State’s all-time leader in career passing yards after a 72- yard touchdown completion to sophomore wide receiver Jordan Williams in the fourth quarter, and it was also a career long reception for Williams. Wenning has now thrown for 9,238 yards in his career.
• Junior running back Jahwan Edwards ran for three touchdowns for the third straight game. It was the eighth career multiple-touchdown game and the sixth career game with three scores for Edwards. He has ten touchdowns on the season.
• Edwards now has 35 career rushing touchdowns and has moved into sole possession on Ball State’s all-time career chart, the record was formerly held by Marcus Merriweather (1999-2002). He is also just two scores away from the school record for total touchdowns in a career, shared by Merriweather and Michael Blair (1993-96) with 38.
• Ball State did not score a touchdown on its opening drive for the first time this season. The Cardinals were the only FBS team in the country to open with a touchdown in each of the first five games.
• For only the second time this season and only the second time in our last 14 games, Ball State trailed an opponent after the first quarter. Ball State fell behind Illinois State 14-9 in the Cardinals season opener.
• Ball State is off to a 5-1 overall start for the first time since 2008. It is just the fourth start of 5-1 or better for the Cardinals since 1978.
• Ball State is now 11-1 in is past 12 regular-season games.
• Ball State’s 248 points this year are the most ever for the Cardinals through the first six games of a season. The 2008 team that went undefeated in the regular season scored 238 points through its first six games.
• With 346 yards through the air, senior quarterback Keith Wenning topped 300 yards passing for the sixth straight game to start the season. Wenning and Oregon State’s Sean Mannion are the only Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks with five or more 300-yard passing games this season.
• It was the 12th 300-yard game of Wenning’s career, which is a school record. His 1,996 passing yards are the most ever by a Ball State quarterback through the first six games of a season.
• Wenning ran for his fourth touchdown of the season and the 12th of his career. Wenning has accounted for 14 touchdowns this season with ten through the air and four on the ground.
• Junior receiver Willie Snead finished with six catches for 104 yards for his eighth career 100-yard receiving game. He has now moved into second with on Ball State’s all-time list for 100-yard receiving games having eight 100-yard games total for his career. Dante Love (2005-08) and Dante Ridgeway (2002-04) hold the record with 11.
• Snead moved into a tie for fourth place on the Cardinals’ career receptions list with 158. He now shares the record with Darius Hill (2005-08).
• Ball State had two receivers with at least 100 yards receiving in the game – Jordan Williams (159) and Snead (104).
• The Cardinals have now generated 15 takeaways on the year. They entered the game 10th in the country in turnovers gained and 10th in the nation in fumble recoveries.
• Jones led the Cardinals for the second straight game with 12 tackles on the year which included nine solo tackles.
• Freshman safety Dae’Shaun Hurley recorded his first career fumble recovery and Quinton Cooper recovered his third fumble of his career and second of the season.
• Jones forced his second fumble of his career and it was his second of the season, while Joel Cox recorded his first career fumble recovery.
• Senior Jeffrey Garrett recorded his third career interception.
