RALEIGH, N.C.—The Virginia volleyball rallied twice at NC State, but the Wolfpack held on to defeat UVa, 25-10, 24-26, 27-25, 18-25 and 15-13 at Reynolds Coliseum Saturday night (Nov. 15). The loss drops the Cavaliers to 15-12 (8-7 ACC) on the season, while NC State improved to 20-7 (11-4 ACC).
NC State earned the first five points of the fifth set, before the Cavaliers claimed the next three. UVa pulled within one point four times, but was never able to tie the Wolfpack who won, 15-13, on a Rachel Buckley kill on the final point.
Freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with 17 kills, while sophomore Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded five blocks and hit .389 with nine kills.
With nine kills, freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) now has the fourth-most kills in UVa freshman history with 374. Burton cracked the top 10 and moved all the way up to seventh on the UVa freshman kill list with 312.
NC State dominated the first set, 25-10, limiting the Cavaliers to a -.094 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack had a 22-18 lead in the second set, but four straight UVa points tied it at 22. With the score tied at 24-24, a kill by Kole and a service ace by Bausback won the set for Virginia, 26-24, and tied the match at 1-1.
Each team fought off a set point in the third before NC State claimed the frame, 27-25, with a kill and a block.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth and never looked back, winning, 25-18. UVa hit .414 in the set with 15 kills against only three errors.
Buckley hit .500 with 17 kills and Dariyan Hopper hit .324 with 18 kills to lead the Wolfpack.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Nov. 16) when they play at No. 15 North Carolina at 5 p.m.
