CHARLOTTESVILLE – Head coach Mark Guilbeau announced that Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women’s tennis at Virginia.
“The entire Virginia women’s tennis program is very happy to welcome Cassie to the University of Virginia and into this team,” Guilbeau said. “We have known Cassie and her family for many years and are so happy she will join us. Cassie is a smart, well-rounded tennis player. She has been taught extremely well. Cassie will have a great impact right away as a very strong singles and doubles player at the top collegiate level. She is also a mature young lady and a conscientious student. Cassie will succeed in the classroom and in the UVA community as well.”
Mercer, who ranked No. 16 nationally in the 2012 Recruiting Rankings by TennisRecruiting.net, has been ranked as high as No. 27 in the 2013 rankings. Mercer has been competitive on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) junior circuit since 2006 and has won multiple singles, doubles and team state titles at Huntington High School. She is the daughter of John and Laurie Mercer. John is in his 12th season as the women’s tennis head coach at Marshall and Laurie also served as the head coach of the Thundering Herd.
“I am so exited to be able to be part of such an amazing team,” Cassie Mercer said. “I can’t wait to come to Virginia and start the next four years!”
