Virginia Sweeps Notre Dame, 3-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind.—The Virginia volleyball team broke a two-match slide, defeating Notre Dame, 39-37, 25-22 and 25-21 Friday (Nov. 22) at Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind. The Cavaliers improved to 16-13 on the season and 9-8 in ACC play, while the Fighting Irish fell to 12-17 (6-12 ACC).
“We were business-like tonight,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We were focused and were very efficient tonight. All five attackers had good nights and if we do that, we’re going to be successful in these last three matches.”
UVa hit .326 for the match, while Notre Dame had a .250 hitting percentage. The Cavaliers had seven service aces compared to the Irish’s one.
With 12 kills Friday, junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) now has 429 on the season, tied for the ninth-most tally in UVa single-season history. Janowski also recorded 10 digs and three service aces.
Sophomore Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .448 with a match-high 17 kills and five blocks, while classmate Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 47 assists.
Freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit .304 with 10 kills, while junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) had a .462 hitting percentage with six kills and no errors on 13 attempts.
The Cavaliers’ 39 points in the first set was a school record and the 76 combined points were the tied for the most ever in a Virginia volleyball contest. Clemson defeated the Cavaliers, 39-37, in the first set of a match in 2003. UVa won the frame on its 12th set point on an ace by Burton. The Irish had two set points denied by Virginia.
“It was fun to be a part of, as both teams wanted the set badly,” Hohenshelt said. “We’re fortunate to come out on top.”
Notre Dame scored three straight points to tie the second set at 22, but kills from Bausback and Blair, followed by a block by Fuller and Blair sealed the set for UVa, 25-22.
With the third set tied, 5-5, the Cavaliers went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 lead and never looked back, winning the frame, 25-21, to complete the sweep.
The Cavaliers return to action Sunday, Nov. 24 when they host Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
