Virginia Closes Season with 3-1 Win over Maryland

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia volleyball team closed the 2013 season with a 22-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-22 victory over Maryland Saturday night (Nov. 30) at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers finish the season with an 18-14 record (11-9 ACC), doubling their win total from 2012 and finishing above .500 in ACC play for the first time since 2008. Maryland ends its season with a 13-19 record (5-15 ACC).
“I thought this match went a lot like our match earlier in the season,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We were able to get some momentum going in the third and fourth sets and were fortunate to come out on top. I think we left some wins on the table this season and that’s disappointing because we could be playing next week (in the NCAA Tournament), but I am very happy with the progress we have made this year.”
The Cavaliers had 65 kills compared to the Terps’ 45, but Maryland outblocked UVa, 14-6.5.
Virginia had four players with double-digit kills, led by junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.), who each had 15 kills. Freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 13, while sophomore Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) tallied 11 kills on .391 hitting.
Senior Emily Rottman, who recorded a match-high 24 digs, finished her UVa career with 1,770 digs, the third-most in Cavalier history. Rottman’s 541 digs this season rank as the fifth-most in Virginia single-season history.
Janowski ends the season with 462 kills, the eighth-most in UVa single-season history, while sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished the campaign with 1,455 assists, the seventh-most in Cavalier single-season history.
Kole and Burton closed the season with 430 and 380 kills, respectively, which rank second and fifth on Virginia’s freshman list.
In the first set, the score was tied at 22 when the Cavaliers recorded errors on three straight points to give the Terps the set, 25-22.
The Cavaliers fought off a set point in the second before earning a set point of their own on a Maryland set error. UVa won the set, 26-24, on a block by Burton and junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.).
In the third, the Cavaliers trailed 17-14, but went on an 8-1 run to take a 22-18 lead and went on to win, 25-22, on a kill by Janowski.
The fourth set was tied at 22 apiece when a Bausback kill followed by two Cavalier blocks clinched the match for UVa, 25-22.
Mary Cushman led Maryland with 15 kills, while Adreene Elliott hit .500 with 13 kills and eight blocks.
