Swanson Named Head Coach of U.S. U-23 Women's National Team

CHICAGO – Virginia head coach Steve Swanson was named the new head coach of the United States Under-23 Women’s National Team, U.S. Soccer announced Monday. Swanson assumes those duties in addition to his role leading the Cavalier program.

Swanson has been a veteran of the U.S. National Team programs for over a decade, most recently leading the United States to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Championship in 2012. From 2000-02, he was the head coach of the U.S. U-16 Girls National Team and the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team. Swanson has also served as an assistant coach with the U-17, U-18, U-20 and full Women’s National Team in recent years.

Swanson, who takes over the U-23 program from Notre Dame head coach Randy Waldrum, will hold his first camp with the team Dec. 14-21 in Sunrise, Fla. Two Cavaliers, junior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) and sophomore defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.), were among the 24 players named to the roster for the camp.

This month’s U-23 camp will run concurrent with a U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team camp in Florida. Virginia had two players called into that camp – sophomore forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) and first-year goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas.). The U-20 camp will be the final preparation before the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in January in the Cayman Islands. The top three teams from that event will qualify for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada next August.
