CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) was named one of the four nominees for the Honda Sports Award for Soccer on Friday. The award, given by THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA), is annually given to the nation’s top player in 12 women’s sports.
Brian joins Abby Dahlkemper of UCLA, Crystal Dunn of North Carolina and Kasey Kallman of Florida State as this year’s soccer nominees. The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The Honda Sports award winner for soccer will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2014 Honda Cup.
Brian, who was named a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy earlier this week, was the leading scorer in the ACC this season with 46 points on 16 goals and a league-high 14 assists. A first-team NSCAA All-American, she tied the Virginia single-season assist record. Brian scored in all four of the Cavaliers’ NCAA Tournament victories as she led the team to its first College Cup appearance in 22 years. Brian was a first-team All-ACC selection for the third consecutive season, in addition to being named to the ACC All-Tournament Team and the All-NCAA Tournament Team. She has also made three appearances for the United States Women’s National Team this year, scoring her first international goal on Sept. 3 against Mexico.
Brian is the first Cavalier to be named a nominee for the Honda Sports Award for Soccer.
