CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia head coach Steve Swanson was named the 2013 NSCAA/Field Turf Division I Women’s National Coach of the Year, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday. Swanson becomes the first national coach of the year in the program’s history.
Swanson, who was also the ACC Coach of the Year and the NSCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year, led the Cavaliers to a 24-1-1 record this season. Virginia had a perfect regular season (19-0-0) and captured the first ACC regular-season title in school history. The Cavaliers reached the NCAA Women’s College Cup for the first time in 22 seasons before falling in penalty kicks to eventual-national champion UCLA in the semifinals.
Virginia set numerous school records in 2013, including 24 wins, 78 goals and 16 shutouts. The Cavaliers opened the season with a school-record 20-game win streak and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the season.
Earlier this month, Swanson was announced as the head coach of the United States U-23 National Team.
