CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia volleyball team won both matches Saturday (Aug. 31) to win the Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over James Madison and a 3-0 sweep against Montana.

“We’ll take three wins anytime,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We found different ways to win. I don’t think we were great this afternoon, but we chipped away and at times tonight, we were really good. Yesterday was a good starting point and this is an even better starting point to work off of.”

Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) was named the Jefferson Cup Most Valuable Player after averaging 5.3 kills per set throughout the weekend. Senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and sophomore transfer Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Kole notched 15 kills, while Burton added 12. Another freshman, Karlie Suber (Mechanicsville, Va.) tallied her first collegiate double-double with 12 digs and 10 assists.

Against Montana (1-2), both teams hit extremely well, but Virginia came out on top, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-23. UVa hit .392 overall, while the Grizzlies hit .323.

In the first set, the Cavaliers hit .375 with 15 kills, including eight by Janowski, on the way to a 25-16 win. UVa hit even better in the second frame with a .455 percentage with 18 kills.
