Cavaliers Drop Two Matches at Western Kentucky Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.–The Virginia volleyball team dropped two matches Saturday (Sept. 14) at the Western Kentucky Invitational. The Cavaliers (4-5) fell to UNLV, 3-1, before dropping a tough five-set match to Ohio, 3-2.
UVa won the first two sets against Ohio (8-1), 25-13 and 25-22, before OU came back to claim the third and fourth sets, 25-21 and 25-14. In the fifth and decisive set, the Bobcats hit .240 and held the Cavaliers to a .074 hitting percentage to pull out the victory, 15-11.
Virginia was led by freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.), who had a match-high 19 kills, and junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.), who added 17 kills.
Junior Mallory Woolridge (Glen Allen, Va.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, hit .333 with 12 kills out of the middle and had a match-high seven blocks, while sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 56 assists. Freshman Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) added a season-high three service aces.
In the first match of the day, UNLV (4-4) hit .293 compared to UVa’s .248 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 win.
Janowski reached the 20-kill mark for the third time this season with a match-high 21 kills. Kole hit .333 with 13 kills, while Woolridge was .312 with seven kills. Senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had her third 20-dig match of the season with 21 digs.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend for the Cavalier Classic Sept. 20-21 at Memorial Gymnasium. Virginia will face off against Seton Hall, Columbia and William and Mary.
