Virginia Drops ACC Opener at Duke, 3-0

DURHAM, N.C.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Duke, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17, Friday night (Sept. 27) at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. UVa fell to 7-6 (0-1 ACC) on the season, while the Blue Devils improved to 10-2 (1-0 ACC).
Duke outhit the Cavaliers, .286-.193, and led in both kills (47-33) and blocks (8-4). The Blue Devils were led by Jeme Obeime, who hit .464 with a match-high 16 kills.
With the score tied at five in the first set, the Blue Devils went on a 9-2 run on the way to a 25-19 win. In the second, UVa led 9-6, but Duke tallied nine out of 10 points to take a 15-10 lead en route to a 25-18 victory.
In the third set, the Blue Devils hit 15 kills and held Virginia to only nine kills in a 25-17 triumph to earn the victory.
Junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with 10 kills each, while junior Mallory Woolridge (Glen Allen, Va.) hit .316 with seven kills.
Senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tied for the match-high with 14 digs, while freshman Karlie Suber (Mechanicsville, Va.) added 10.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Sept. 28) when they play at Wake Forest at 6:30 p.m.
