Cavaliers Begin Play Against New ACC Rivals
Virginia gets its first taste of the new-look ACC with its match at Syracuse. The Cavaliers’ next ACC match is next Friday (Oct. 4) at home against Pittsburgh; the programs have met just twice previously. UVa will travel to Notre Dame on Oct. 26 for just its fourth meeting against the Fighting Irish. Virginia also played future ACC rival Louisville in the season opener in a non-conference tilt.

Gelnovatch Reaches 250-Win Plateau
With the win Tuesday over Providence, Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch became the second UVa coach to reach the 250-win plateau in his head coaching career, joining his former mentor Bruce Arena. Gelnovatch owns a 250-103-34 record in his 18-year tenure.

Last Time Out: Virginia 4, Providence 0
Eric Bird scored a pair of first-half goals to lift Virginia to a 4-0 victory over previously unbeaten Providence Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium. Freshmen Patrick Foss and Riggs Lennon each added second-half goals for their first college scores.

In recording the team’s third clean sheet of the year, Virginia did not surrender a shot on goal. UVa put five shots on goal, with Providence keeper Keasel Broome making one save. Virginia out-shot Providence 11-6 and posted four corner kicks to two for Providence.

Offense Rolling of Late
Virginia has scored 10 goals in its last three matches and 12 over the last 297 minutes of game action, dating back to the final seven minutes of the Wake Forest match. The Cavaliers tallied three goals in their first three matches combined.

Plenty of Offensive Threats
Virginia has scored 15 goals in seven games this season. Eleven different players have scored, matching the Cavaliers’ total from the entire 2012 season.

Tough Schedule Continues
Syracuse is the sixth opponent on the Virginia schedule who has been ranked at some point this season. The Orange currently is ranked No. 24 by Soccer America.

Eleven of UVa’s 17 opponents this season are currently ranked or receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll (as of last poll on Sept. 17). UVa’s first four opponents all are currently ranked in the NSCAA poll: Louisville (18), St. John’s (9), Clemson (16), Wake Forest (24).

UVa still has matches on the docket with North Carolina (1), Notre Dame (4), Maryland (8) and VCU (17). Boston College, George Mason and Providence – also on the UVa schedule – are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll.

Noting Syracuse
The Orange boast a 6-2 record following a 3-0 win over UMass on Wednesday evening. Syracuse owns a 1-2 ACC mark following a 2-1 win at Duke last weekend. The Orange suffered defeats to Notre Dame (3-0) and Virginia Tech (2-1 in OT) in conference play.

Up Next
Virginia comes home for a pair of matches next week, facing No. 10 VCU on Tuesday (Oct. 1) and Pittsburgh on Friday (Oct. 4).
